MEMBER SERVICES

Realizing that many colleges face increased pressure to hold the line on spending while continuing to provide campus services, AVIC consolidates the purchasing power of the private, not-for-profit campuses in Vermont so that members may purchase select products at a discount.  AVIC offers optional group purchasing opportunities in a number of areas such as equipment leasing, office supplies, furniture, and insurance as well as access to the State of Vermont contract pricing.

State Legislation

AVIC is the primary advocate for its member colleges and universities on matters under consideration by the Vermont State Legislature.  AVIC develops its legislative agenda in November of each year.  We traditionally seek legislative support for students in need of financial aid funding as well as economic and workforce development issues.

Vermont’s legislative session runs from early January through mid-May.  The adjournment date varies from year to year, but in general the legislature tries to complete its work in sixteen or seventeen weeks as it is a citizen legislature.  The legislature is comprised of 30 members of Senate and 150 members of the House of Representatives.

THE STATEHOUSE SESSION AND THE VPR STREAMS

VPR provides live streaming of the House and Senate proceedings. This is a live feed from the Legislature without editing or commentary. The streams are quiet when the lawmakers are not meeting, or if they’re meeting but turn off the microphones. When they are in session and the mics are on you can hear the proceedings via these streams.

The Legislature typically remains in session through April, convening Tuesday through Friday. The House is generally in session at 10am Tuesday, 1pm Wednesday and Thursday, and 9:30am Friday. The Senate is generally in session Tuesday 9:30 a.m., Friday 8:30 a.m., and other times, “at call” of the President Pro Tem. This is subject to change by the Legislature.
